How Metal Braces Feel in the First Few Day

Getting braces is an exciting step toward a better smile, but it can also feel strange at first. While you might be thrilled about your new journey, it’s normal to feel a bit nervous about what’s to come. In this blog, Dr. Christopher Murphy at Southern Maine Orthodontics discusses what you can expect during the first few days after getting braces and how to navigate this adjustment period.

Tooth Sensitivity and Discomfort

After getting braces, your teeth might feel sensitive. This happens because your mouth is adjusting to the pressure of the metal. Don’t worry; this sensitivity usually goes away after a little while.

You may also feel some discomfort around your gums and jaw from sitting in the dental chair for a long time. This feeling will fade, so be patient. Remember to always to ask your orthodontist any questions or concerns you have.

Mouth Sores

It’s common to get mouth sores after getting braces. The metal can rub against your gums and cheeks, causing irritation. To help soothe these sores, you can rinse your mouth with warm saltwater.

Using dental wax can also help. Just take a small piece, roll it into a ball, and place it on the parts of the braces that are bothering you. As your mouth gets used to the braces, the sores should stop appearing.

Changes in Talking and Eating

In the beginning, you might notice that talking feels a bit different. Your mouth is getting used to the braces, and this is completely normal.

Eating can also be tricky at first. Some foods you used to love might feel different, and braces can catch bits of food. Be sure to keep up with your brushing and flossing to keep your mouth clean and healthy.
